Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested.

He finds solace in a unique book which he carries on his person and guards closely, whilst surviving by hunting small animals and seeking goods in destroyed houses and vehicles to trade in villages for water and supplies. When he reaches a village ruled by the powerful mobster, Carnegie, the man views Eli's impressive fighting skills and offers Eli a place within his gang. Carnegie presses his blind lover Claudia to send her daughter, Solara, to at least convince Eli to spend the night by sleeping with him. However, Eli proves to be the better man when he gently declines her advances. The girl sees Eli's book, and when Carnegie finds out he beats her mother until she reveals what she saw. Carnegie sends his gang into the wasteland to take the book from Eli, but the man proves to be a formidable foe as he makes it more than clear that if they want the book, they must first take his life.

Wed Dec 1 00:00:00 UTC+0200 2010If you aren't the kind of person who reads the Hollywood industry news, the new film from Australian director John Hillcoat (The Road, The Proposition) is also the first major project shepherded by Megan Ellison, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison's daughter, and her Annapurna Pictures production company. Ellison, who has produced a couples indies that went nowhere, revamped her game by first acquiring the rights to the Terminator franchise in early 2011. Refreshingly adverse to talking with the press, she's on the tip of every insider's tongue and her upcoming projects include The Master from Paul Thomas Anderson and Killing Them Softly, Andrew Dominik's follow-up to the thoroughly awesome The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. The cast for Hillcoat's Prohibition-era drama ensures worldwide appeal, and we're happy The Weinstein Company didn't slip this one into the late 2011 calendar in order to qualify for Oscars. If this film bombs, I give up and will only watch Fast & Furious/Step Up movies for an entire month.
